Telenor and Telia have previously informed Nkom that they plan to shut down the 2G networks in 2025. Telenor has decided to postpone the shutdown of its 2G network until the end of 2027.
We were very early to use data communication between our serversand the devices out in the field, along roads and other applications. We have constantly developed our devices in line with new technologies and the devices that are deployed today support both 4G and 5G communication. We recommend our customers to take action to ensure a safe transition to new technology.
2G is a term for the second generation of mobile telephony, the first digital mobile voice telephony that succeeded analogue systems such as NMT. 2G has the capacity for very simple data transfers, while heavier data transmissions need the capacity that 4G and 5G have. 4G and 5G are IP-based networks and provide significantly higher speeds for data transfer.
Telenor and Telia say that the 2G network will be shut down tobe able to deliver even better services over 4G and 5G and to ensure thatequipment that requires more capacity actually gets it. This means that it willno longer be possible to communicate via 2G to equipment that is out along theroad, on the sports field or in the park where we currently control the lightsfor our customers. Many of our customers will therefore have to upgrade theirdevices in the field so that they can communicate via 4G and 5G.
Datek Light Control wants to ensure our customers long-term andpredictable solutions. Therefore, Datek has developed alternatives to thecurrent product portfolio so that it is easy to switch to 4G and 5G compatibleequipment. Datek wants to initiate conversations with our customers and come upwith suggestions for solutions, so that we solve the challenge together. Wewant to safeguard our customers' interests and ensure that socially criticalservices are not affected by any changes from Norwegian mobile operators.
