For many years, Datek Light Control has delivered systems for controlling outdoor lighting in Sandefjord municipality. The Zhaga Book 18 connector makes the lighting system smart.

Sandefjord municipality has over time used sensor technology in Sverres gate to register traffic throughout the day. The purpose is to map the level of activity and assess the possibility of reducing the intensity of the street lighting during periods of low traffic. If you manage to do this, you will both save the environment, cut costs and at the same time reduce light pollution.The municipality will then only light up what is necessary to be able to maintain safe streets and urban spaces where people travel.
To achieve this, a sensor is connected to the luminaires that registers the traffic in the street. This in turn is connected to the IoT network the municipality already has from Datek Light Control and ensures that the data from the sensor is collected, processed and presented in Sandefjord municipality's web portal from Datek.
Many municipalities are not aware that they already possess parts of a smart city infrastructure that can easily be further developed. The large number of lampposts, with their position along streets and roads where people travel, where there is already access to electricity, are perfect places to deploy different types of sensors.In the future, we will see extensive use of sensors for air quality, metrology, traffic monitoring and the like deployed in the municipalities' lighting systems."

Thomas Skjærven, installer at Laugstol AS, says that the installation process has been incredibly efficient and cost-saving in this project. After the control unit has been clicked into the luminaires, a communication network (MESH) is established and based on the acquisition of GPS signals from the GPS module in the control units, all luminaire units are automatically placed in Datek Light Control's map solution.

The municipality has street lighting that is controlled both at the luminaire level and via ignition cabinets. At the luminaire level, the municipality now uses the brand new control unit that has been developed to fit the new, standardized Zhaga Book 18 socket. In addition to the luminaire units, we have also introduced our brand new Zhaga.

Traffic monitoring is an ever-growing segment of IoT and smart cities.By monitoring and registering the traffic and activity in a street, a districtor other areas, the customer can quickly gain a good understanding of the activity. Be it pedestrians, cyclists or motorists. There are good mechanisms that can distinguish between individual road users and provide information about how many people are in the area for a period of time.
Sandefjord municipality will consider whether they can lower the light level further at night. With our solution, there are many other options as well. If, for example, roadworks are planned in the city, the development of new properties, or if the city center is to be cordoned off to arrange a festival, it can be useful to know how many people pass the place in question during a day. In this way, you can assess any detours and redirection of traffic to ensure a good traffic flow for both motorists, public transport and pedestrians.
