Bærum Municipality

To strengthen sustainability in the municipality, Bærum is using smart technology. With a future-oriented control solution from Datek Light Control, significant cost savings are achieved, while the lighting environment is improved – for the benefit of both residents and the local species diversity.

Smart lighting in Bærum municipality

In 2018, the starting gun was fired for the municipality's major project "The outdoor lighting of the future". The background for the project was that mercury luminaires, which are also not very energy-efficient, were banned and the municipality had to replace the old light points. Today, almost all lighting is connected to the new lighting control system, supplied by Datek Light Control.

We help the municipality with technology to be able to control and control everything from road lights, light trails and sports fields, to public buildings such as schools and kindergartens. Bærum municipality has already replaced almost 9000 old light fixtures with new and energy-saving LED luminaires.

An environmentally conscious municipality

The new control system gives the municipality the opportunity to control each individual light fixture. The municipality can now choose whether to turn the brightness up, down or whether the luminaire should be turned off completely. This is to ensure that there is the right light in the right place at the right time, but also to reduce light pollution in densely populated areas.

Another solution used by the municipality is sensors that register movement and that can light lights on, for example, a parking lot, bus pocket or other places where there should normally be little light at night. In this way, there is enough light when people are on site, but the light is dimmed considerably when there is no one there. This helps to create security for residents, but also helps to make the surroundings better for insects and animals.

Another important aspect is that the municipality gets control over how much electricity is used. They receive reports on energy consumption in each individual luminaire in a separate web portal. In the portal, the municipality also receives notifications of faults or up coming faults, and can thus effectively troubleshoot and correct the fault. This will benefit the residents of the municipality as faults are rectified faster, and there are no periods without street lighting.

The main effect of such a system is to save electricity costs, provide residents with the right lighting, take the environment seriously, and improve the quality of light for Bærum's residents. The system can be built outside with several SmartCity services. In the longterm, the system will be used for traffic counting and measuring air quality. Bærum municipality is now testing the first mobility sensors connected to street lights at Fornebu.

The municipality can currently control the light level in each individual light fixture. In addition, they have access to status, notification of faults, as well as energy consumption in all luminaires.

"- This gives us the opportunity to significantly reduce energy consumption, improve the lighting environment, reduce light pollution, as well as streamline daily operations and maintenance." - Kirill Semenov, project manager in Bærum municipality.

Fornebu showcase

Safe and well-fit underpass at Fornebu

Fornebu is being developed into a green and urban urban area and is a test arena for the municipality's climate work. Here, the municipality exploits the potential of Datek Light Control's solution. Virtually all outdoor lighting at Fornebu has been replaced with modern energy-efficient LEDl luminaires with Datek control node connected to an IoT radio network. Streets, cycle paths, underpasses, schoolyards, kindergartens and football fields all have lighting that can be individually adapted to the different needs throughout the day. The light is turned on and off based on sensors that measure daylight.

The light fixtures change the light levels throughout the day and season based on different needs. A good example is the pond at the Telenor building, where salamanders are particularly exposed to light pollution when they are on the move in spring and autumn. Here, the municipality uses the technology in the light fixtures to lower the brightness down to 20 percent so that the salamander is not disturbed.

" - There is constantly new knowledge about how light affects humans and animals. Smart technology makes it easy to adjust the brightness as needed. With the new control system, we are prepared for such changes. "
- Kirill Semenov, project manager in Bærum municipality.

The right light at the right time at the sports facilities

Datek Light Control also supplies control of lights on sports fields. In Bærum municipality, all artificial turf pitches and sports facilities are controlled by Datek Light Control. This means that the sports teams get the right light for the right activity on the facilities. For example, you can have training lights on when there is training and use match lights only when there are matches. This is both energy-saving and cost-effective for the municipality.

With course control from Datek Light Control, you can make even better use of the facilities and ensure that even more residents in the municipality can participate in both organized and unorganized activity at the facilities. Bærum municipality has been particularly concerned that more of the residents should use the facilities. Therefore, they have installed an audiences witch on many of the facilities. The switch allows users to light lights on the facility themselves for shorter periods. This helps to increase the use of the facilities, and get more people to engage in unorganized activity in a safe and good environment.
